Marines,

On behalf of the Officers and Board Members of our Class alumni organization, I want wish each of you and your families a Blessed Christmas (or the event being celebratedin your religious tradition) and a Prosperous 2009. As we have Marines deployed in both Afghanistan and Iraq during this Holiday Season, please remember them in your prayers.

As our Reunion is scheduled for October 7 - 11, 2009, I hope those that have not attended a reunion in the past will make a New Year's Resolution to join the Class in San Diego and renew the camaraderie of 1965 and 1966, when we were all last together. I look forward to seeing each of you in San Diego in October 2009!

Semper Fi,
Dave Mellon
President

Operations and Charitable Mission

We kicked off the 2009 Annual Voluntary Contribution (AVC) drive on the Marine Corps Birthday. To date, we have received 23 "contributions" totaling $2,603.

You will recall that membership in our organization is not predicated on payment of dues. We do, however, solicit "voluntary contributions" to support the annual operations and our charitable mission. The "suggested" AVC is $25. We do provide recognition on the website (www.usmc-thebasicschool-1966.com ) of all those Classmates who do contribute. The leadership levels approved by the Board are as follows:
  • Eagle - $150 or more
  • Globe - $76 to $149
  • Anchor - $1 to $75
In 2008, your annual voluntary contributions funded our operations and allowed charitable contributions of $4000 to the Injured Marine Semper Fi Fund and $2000 to the Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation. We are considering making a significant Charitable Contribution in conjunction with our Reunion in 2009. As we are a Non-Profit, contributions are tax-deductible. Please consider making a tax deductible contributions for 2009. Please show your support for the Class by contributing.

Please send your tax deductible Voluntary Contribution check made out to "38th OCC/BC 3-66 Alumni" to our Treasurer at the following address:

Chuck Sooter
11932 Yearling Street
Cerritos, CA 90703-7615

Thank you for your continuing support of the Class.

Crowne Plaza San Diego Accepting Reservations

As it is now less than one year from the opening of our 2009 Reunion, the host hotel, Crowne Plaza, San Diego is now accepting reservations. As noted earlier, we have a guaranteed rate of $119/night. Hotel reservation may be made by calling the hotel toll free at 1-800-882-0858 and asking for "reservations". Please be sure to mention that you are with the Reunion group "USMC-38th OCC". This will ensure that you receive the guaranteed rate. I suggest that you make your hotel reservations as soon as possible. This will guarantee your room and keep the Reunion Committee updated with regard to how many Classmates we should expect.

We will be sending out more information on the program and the cost of the Reunion registration after the new year and the program is finalized and the budget is prepared. In the meantime, please make your hotel reservations.

It is with regret that I pass along the following report of the passing of a Classmate:

Larry D. Richards died suddenly on November 22, 2008. Larry held an undergraduate and Masters degree from the University of Maryland. He served in the U. S. Marine Corps from 1959 through 1990. He completed the 38th Officer Candidate Course in 1965 and The Basic School in 1966 as a member of Class 3-66. His Marine career included 13 months in Vietnam as the platoon commander of 1st Platoon, Lima Company, 3rd Battalion, 4th Marines.

Upon retirement from the Marine Corps with the rank of Colonel, Larry became a project manager for Computer Sciences Corporation for 13 years. He retired from CSC in 2003.

He was an avid golfer and very active in his church.

A memorial service was held at the First United Methodist Church in Cary, North Carolina on November 29, 2009.

In lieu of flowers, the family requested memorial contributions be made to the Injured Marine Semper Fi Fund. The 38th OCC/BC 3-66, USMC, Alumni, Inc. has made a donation in Larry's name.

Financial Condition

Our Treasurer, Chuck Sooter, reports that as of December 15, 2008, we have funds on hand of $13,560, split between our checking, savings and money market accounts. You will recall that the Board has endorsed maintaining approximately $5000 for annual operations and advance funding for reunion expenses. As we are considering a major contribution to either the Wounded Warrior Battalion, West (Camp Pendleton) or the Injured Marine Semper Fi Fund in conjunction with "Reunion 2009", we urge you to show your support for the Class by making a tax-deductible Annual Voluntary Contribution.

(See the article above on AVC to learn how to make a contribution)

Changes To Website

The Board has appointed a new committee, The Website Revision Committee comprised of Steve Bowen, Dave Mellon and Jack Sheehan. The Committee has engaged a new Webmaster, Sam Patel, to improve the ease of use of the website. It will take approximately a month to put into place most of the changes. In the meantime, the existing site will be available for your use. You can access the website by clicking the following link:

www.usmc-thebasicschool-1966.com

The Committee will advise you when the changes have been posted to the website, so you can check them out and give us any ideas you might have for further improvements.

Add Your Recollections of those lost in Vietnam

As you probably know, our Class lost 32 men as a result of service in Vietnam. Board Member, Terry Cox has agreed to coordinate the collection and posting of recollections of these Classmates on the website. If you have a little time during the holidays, please go to the website and review what is written about our Classmates there. If you have additional information which would add further texture to the tapestry of their lives, please follow the instructions on the website and submit your stories to Terry. He will ensure they get added to information already collected on the website.

To access the Remembrance Project, go to the website

www.usmc-thebasicschool-1966.com

Click on "Members of the Corporation" (The first item on the left side) Click on "3. Vietnam Deaths - Site of the Remembrance Project

There you can view what has been posted already and detailed instructions are available on how to add your recollections of each man to that already posted.

Thank you for adding your recollections to the histories of these "Warriors", who "gave all".
